From Hotel Student to AI Designer for a Korean Company!
"To be honest, I’m not great at talking to lots of people. I studied Hotel Management, but it wasn't for me. Working remotely with PICKDI gives me freedom and comfort. It's the perfect fit!"
- Nu, Designer at Han Joong SS
Do you feel like you're a career switcher? Do you have skills but not the "right" degree? Are you looking for a job that respects your talent AND your personality?
Meet Nu (Trúc Anh)! She’s been a remote designer with PICKDI for over a year. She studied Hotel Management, but she is now a star designer for a Korean agriculture company (they sell food for Hanwoo beef!). Her story proves that you don’t need a perfect resume to find an amazing remote job.
Q: You studied Hotel Management but now you're a designer. How did that happen?
Nu - Hi! Yes, I'm a "tay ngang." (laughs) I studied hotels because I'm from Vũng Tàu, a tourist city. But after my internship, I realized I didn't enjoy interacting with so many customers. It made me uncomfortable.
I liked design, so I started learning on my own. I saw PICKDI's ads, but to be honest, it was very new in Vietnam and "not very clear". I just took a risk and tried their skills test. I failed other tests, but I passed the test for Han Joong SS!
Q: Why do you think you passed that specific test?
Nu - The other tests were for beauty companies and maybe needed more traditional design skills. But this company was in agriculture. Their test wasn't just about making things pretty. It was about reading data and numbers and turning them into a design.
Because of my Hotel Management studies, I was actually good at analyzing data! PICKDI’s test found my hidden strength. That's how I, a non-specialist, got the job.
Q: Working for a Korean agriculture company sounds... different. What's it like?
Nu - At first, I was a little sad it wasn't a "flashy" cosmetics company. (laughs) And in the beginning, my Korean boss was very quiet. I was so worried! I thought, "Does he hate my work? Does he not like me?"
I asked the PICKDI team, and they checked. It turns out my boss was just very busy! He had no complaints at all. He is actually very open-minded. Think about it: he runs a traditional company, but he was brave enough to hire a remote designer from Vietnam. He also loves new technology, especially AI!
Q: You use AI? Tell us about a project you're proud of.
Nu - This is my favorite memory! My boss wanted to make a video about his life story. But we are remote, so we couldn't fly to Korea to film him.
So, I suggested, "What if we use AI to create an avatar of you... and have the AI avatar tell your story?"
He loved the idea! I did it, and he was SO happy. It was the first time in one year I saw him that happy with a project. It felt amazing. We also use AI to make the product photos (beef and farm supplies) look much more professional for the website.
Q: Is the work interesting? Or do you just do the same boring tasks?
Scarlet - It's so interesting! I get to "experience many new things." I don't just do Facebook ads. I work on projects for the Japanese market, I do print designs, designs for trucks, display booths, and landing pages for e-commerce.
The best part is I get "direct" access to the real Korean market and even the Japanese market. I’m learning new design styles all the time, which is very different from just working for the Vietnam market.
Q: It sounds like your Korean client is really nice. Is that true?
Nu - He is! Here’s a story that really touched me.
My boss came to Vietnam for a business trip during Mid-Autumn Festival (the Korean Thanksgiving, a huge holiday). Even though he was extremely busy, he personally contacted me and wanted to invite me to dinner.
We couldn't find a time that matched, so we didn't get to meet. But I was so happy and surprised. He was on a busy trip during a major holiday, but he still thought about me—his remote employee in another country. It shows they really see you and respect you as a person, not just a worker.
Q: What's your final advice for Vietnamese candidates who are nervous to apply?
Nu:
Don't worry about being "tay ngang." PICKDI's tests are made to find your real, hidden skills, just like they found my data skill.
Remote work is amazing. If you are an introvert like me, or if you just want freedom and comfort, this is the best.
PICKDI and the clients are reliable. The clients are professional and surprisingly nice. And the PICKDI staff are so supportive (ấm lòng). Any time I had a question, they helped me immediately.
Just take the risk and try the test. You might be surprised!
