Confessions of a Pickdi HR Admin - What I Wish I Knew Before Applying
What is it really like to apply for and work at a fully remote company? Who better to ask than someone from the HR team who sees it all?
We sat down with Leah, our HR Admin, for a candid conversation. She shares her surprisingly skeptical start, what she’s learned about our candidates, and the funny stories that happen when a remote team finally meets in person.
Q: Hi Leah, let's start from the beginning. We heard you had an interesting journey to Pickdi. Can you tell us about it?
Leah - It was definitely unexpected! I had just left my old job and wasn't planning on looking for a new one right away. Then one day, a friend sent me a link to apply for an HR position at Pickdi. To be honest, I couldn't find any information about the company online, and my first thought was, "Is this a scam?" It seemed a little sketchy!
But I applied anyway. The whole process was incredibly fast. I interviewed one day, and the offer meeting was scheduled for the next. I was so sure I had failed the first interview—our CEO, looked so serious—that I didn't even check my email for the offer! Someone had to message me privately to tell me to check it. Everything, from applying to getting the offer, happened in about a week. It felt like I just woke up one day and suddenly had a new job.
Q: That’s quite a start! Now that you’ve been here for a while, what do you enjoy most about the work culture?
Leah - I think there are two main things. First, the team is incredibly nice and supportive. Everyone helps each other out.
Second, and most importantly, is that our CEO is very open to new ideas. He really listens when we share suggestions for how to improve our work processes. If it’s a good idea, he’ll trust you and give you the power to make the change. He empowers the team to take ownership, which is a great feeling.
Q: As an HR Admin, what has the job actually been like? Did it match your expectations?
Leah - It has gone far beyond my initial expectations. My background is actually in Marketing, not HR, so this field was quite new to me. I've learned the entire recruitment process from the ground up here—from writing job descriptions and screening candidates to managing a very high volume of applications.
Pickdi’s hiring process is also very different from other companies in Vietnam. For example, we often use practical assignments instead of just reviewing a CV. As I've stayed longer, I've been given more and more different tasks. I'll be honest, we are definitely pushed to do a lot, but it’s through that process that I’ve been able to learn so much
Q: You talk to candidates every day. From your perspective, what do they care about the most?
Leah - Because we are a remote company, I’ve found that the biggest concerns for candidates are transparency and legitimacy. They want to know, "Is this company real? Is it a scam?"
Because of that, they really value how we communicate. They appreciate fast responses and being kept updated throughout the hiring process, from application to final results. It's our job in the HR team to be that bridge of communication and answer their questions quickly. It helps build trust and shows them that we are a credible and professional company.
Q: Based on that, who do you think is the best fit for Pickdi?
Leah - I think younger professionals tend to be a better fit. They are generally more accustomed to the fast-paced, online environment. We've seen some older members struggle because they aren't used to working and communicating entirely online with a client in Korea.
So, the ideal person is someone who is young, adaptable, and genuinely open to working remotely. It’s a style of work that requires constant online follow-up, and if you're not comfortable with that, it can be difficult.
Q: Finally, working remotely means you don't see your team often. Do you have a favorite memory from your time here?
Leah - My favorite memories are definitely from our two offline meetups. We had one in Saigon and a more recent one in Vung Tau. Because we only ever see each other on screens and most of the time without cameras on it’s so much fun to finally meet in person.
Thank you, Leah, for sharing your honest and insightful story! It’s clear that Pickdi is a fast-moving and interesting place for anyone ready to embrace the future of work.
