From "Suspicious" Job Post to a Year of Success A Designer's Unfiltered Story

In a world full of too-good-to-be-true online job ads, a little skepticism is healthy. So when designer Pey first found PICKDI, she was wary. "Honestly, it looked like a scam," she admits with a laugh. One year later, she's thriving as a remote designer for our client, Mommy Care, all while balancing her university studies. Her story is a refreshingly honest look at the realities of remote work - the good, the challenging, and the unexpectedly funny. We sat down with Pey for a candid chat about her journey.

Q: Hey Pey! Let’s start at the beginning. You were pretty skeptical when you first found PICKDI. What made you apply anyway? Pey - I was a design student looking for a remote job that was related to Korea, since I speak the language. I found PICKDI on a job board, but there were no reviews, and I wasn't sure if it was a legitimate, long-term organization. I decided to apply just to try it out without high expectations. It was a remote design job for a Korean company - it was exactly what I was looking for, so it was worth a shot.

Q: You've described your work with your client, Mommy Care, as "chill". What's a typical workday like for you? Pey - The workload is very manageable. It's task-based, and while it gets busier during big sales or product launches, it's generally not overwhelming. This was perfect for me as a student. The best part is the flexibility. As long as I deliver high-quality work according to their requests, everyone is happy.

Q: Remote work can sometimes feel isolating. Have you experienced any challenges with that? Pey - That's been the biggest challenge with this specific role. For the first year, I never had a single video call or saw my clients' faces. It felt very disconnected - like I was just a task-doer. It's hard to be creative or suggest new ideas when you don't have that direct communication about the company's goals. However, I had an opportunity to have an in-person dinner with the Mommy Care team while I was in Korea. Meeting them in person made the entire work relationship feel so much more real and genuine. I'm incredibly grateful to PICKDI for creating that opportunity.

Q: Speaking of challenges, can you share a memorable or funny story from your time here? Pey - (Laughs) There's a funny one about the time-tracking system. My client often sends me tasks late at night, around 9 or 10 PM, so I'd work through the night. But PICKDI's system was set up for a typical 9-to-5 workday. I kept getting automated emails telling me I'd missed my punch-in time and my lunch break! I had to email back and forth explaining that I don't exactly take a "lunch break" at 2 AM. It took a little while, but eventually, the PICKDI team understood and adapted for my unique schedule. It’s a good example of their flexibility.

Q: A lot of candidates worry about service fees. What's your take on the compensation at PICKDI? Pey - I've seen the online complaints. However, for my specific workload and compared to the Vietnamese market, I feel my service fee is quite good and stable. Plus, a huge benefit for me is that PICKDI’s Account Managers handle all the contracts, taxes, and legal paperwork. I hate dealing with that stuff, so having them manage it lets me focus completely on my design work. That convenience is a big plus.

Q: How have you grown as a designer over the past year? Pey - At first, the tasks were a bit repetitive. But over time, they’ve become more complex, and I've even started working on video. The biggest skill I've developed is processing information faster and more accurately. I’ve learned to read a brief very carefully to understand exactly what the client wants. This has helped me understand the nuances of Korean design culture - their focus on minimalism and following the client's vision, which can be very different from what I learned in school.

Q: Finally, you mentioned that PICKDI’s job posts can sometimes look "like a scam." That's incredibly honest feedback! What would you say to other candidates who might feel the same way? Pey - I’d say I understand completely. An offer for a 100% remote job with a Korean company and an attractive service fee can sound too good to be true. But I think PICKDI is working to build that trust. Doing interviews like this one and sharing real stories from members is a great step. My experience has been legitimate and positive. My advice is to be like me - give it a shot. You might be surprised.
